Most Pilates Instructors Start Their Careers $8,000 in the Hole Before They Teach a Single Class. He Built a Different Way In.
"I went head first into creating the program that I would have loved to train under," he says.
Charley Carroll said that about a Pilates instructor certification program he built from scratch in early 2025. He was a former federal attorney turned Pilates instructor who decided to build something different.
The traditional route into Pilates instruction costs $5,000 to $8,000 and takes six to eight months. Students travel to different cities for different training modules, accumulate the hours, pay the fees, and emerge ready to teach group classes at $30 to $40 per session. The math has never quite worked. The barrier to entry is high. The earning potential on the other side is modest, at least at the start.
Oak Cliff Pilates Academy is a five-week intensive Mat and Reformer Pilates instructor certification at $2,750. It launched in September 2025. In under a year it has generated over $100,000 in revenue and is on track to surpass $150,000 in its first full year. All of this, even before the virtual evergreen version is launched.
Before the Business, There Was a Federal Attorney Who Knew Early That Law Was Not the Long Game
Charley is 42. He knew while he was in law school that being an attorney for the long run was probably not going to be for him. What he did not know was where he would land instead.
He landed in Pilates. Not by design. By accident, and then by choice.
In 2019, a friend who would later become one of the owners of Oak Cliff Pilates was leading a new studio and looking to bring a few people onto the training staff. Charley had very little experience with Pilates at the time, but the opportunity sounded fun and felt worth exploring. She put him and a small group through an immersive, accelerated training, and he began teaching classes in Spring 2019. He taught a handful of classes a week as a hobby while continuing to practice law.
When Oak Cliff Pilates opened in 2021, Charley joined the training staff. As the studio expanded across 2024 and 2025, his teaching volume grew from a few classes a week to nearly 20 weekly, and his role expanded beyond teaching into studio operations, customer service, hiring, and instructor development.
He left the legal field in Spring 2023. The transition brought significant financial and personal difficulty. He felt lost and broke, but he kept teaching, kept showing up, and gradually built the clarity that comes from committing to something fully. By early 2025 the owners trusted him enough to hand him something new.
"Here," they said. "You just own this and do it."
What they handed him was the education program. The chance to build the Pilates certification experience from scratch, for the students he knew were out there, the ones the existing system was pricing out.
The Post-COVID Pilates Boom Created the Problem. They Built the Solution.
By early 2025, Oak Cliff Pilates had two successful studios preparing to open a third, and enough experience to know exactly where instructor education was falling short. Post-COVID demand had pushed Pilates into new markets nationally and globally, studios were opening at a rapid pace, and the need for qualified instructors was growing faster than the certification pipeline could supply. They had hired instructors trained by traditional programs. They had watched what held new instructors back and what made good ones great. The gap between what the market needed and what the existing model was producing was obvious to anyone standing where they were standing.
The traditional certification path had not changed. The cost was still prohibitive. The timeline was still months-long. For someone looking to teach group classes at $30 to $40 per session, a few hours a week to start, the economics did not hold.
The opportunity was clear. Build the alternative. Cut the cost. Cut the time. Keep the quality.
The owner got behind the vision and gave Charley the greenlight to run with it.
"I had this confidence that what we could provide was really something that people were looking for," he says.
They launched in September 2025.
How a Former Attorney and a Master Instructor Built a Pilates Certification That Keeps Getting Better With Every Cohort
They did not begin with a large audience or an established online following. What they had was the reputation and goodwill Oak Cliff Pilates had earned in Dallas, and a belief that many aspiring instructors were looking for a more practical and accessible pathway into the profession.
That proved to be true.
He did not build it alone. From the beginning, he brought in Cory Rojo as co-creator and co-instructor of the program. Cory is a classically trained, highly adaptable Pilates instructor with over 15 years of experience. The partnership was intentional. Charley had the operational vision and firsthand knowledge of what the industry needed. Cory had the deep classical training and pedagogical expertise to shape how that knowledge would be taught. Cory consulted as Charley developed the comprehensive digital Certification Course Suite: six online courses covering the history and evolution of Pilates, core principles of the method, functional anatomy, essential teaching skills, industry knowledge, both the Mat and Reformer methods, and extensive movement libraries.
"We didn't just set out to simply make Mat and Reformer certification more accessible," Charley says. "We set out to build instructors who studios would actually want to hire. Every part of the curriculum was designed around practical teaching ability, not just accumulating theory and technical knowledge."
That shared philosophy runs through every cohort. Charley and Cory teach every session together, bringing both contemporary and classical Pilates perspectives to each group of students. Rather than spending months primarily memorizing information, students immediately begin moving, cueing, observing, and teaching. They think like instructors from their very first day.
He launched with what he had, watched how students moved through it, identified where the gaps were, and iterated. Then he did it again. And again. Running multiple cohorts in the months since September 2025, each one sharper than the last, each one bringing the product closer to what he knew it could be.
In spring 2026, he finished what he calls the flagship version. The one he is confident enough in to call the standard.
"Early in the creative process, I gave myself permission to stop chasing the 'perfect' program and instead focus on building a genuinely great one that could be built upon," he says. "What you create today will certainly evolve as you learn, grow, and receive feedback. I trusted that what we were building would continue to improve over time, but that what we had to offer right now was genuinely valuable."
That principle shaped how he treated the students who came through early. As the program improved, he brought them with it, giving early cohorts access to updated versions of their training because the people who were there from the beginning deserved to benefit from what it became.
He had used Kajabi years earlier for a different business and came back to it specifically to build the digital arm of the academy. The platform now hosts the Certification Course Suite, the six-course digital curriculum students access during training and keep after completion. Every cohort moves through the same unified track Charley and Cory finalized in spring 2026.
The Numbers
Since launching in September 2025, Oak Cliff Pilates Academy has generated over $100,000 in revenue, with the most recent cohort selling out and demand leading the team to increase their original enrollment capacity. That single cohort is expected to generate more than $73,000. The program is on track to surpass $150,000 in its first full year. From a standing start, with no existing audience for the education program, running three cohorts a year in Dallas and attracting students from across the DFW area and as far as Mongolia and Costa Rica.
"We're planning to launch our virtual certification program in early 2027 while also exploring opportunities to bring OCPA to other markets through live training events," he says. "If our first year is any indication, I expect we'll double, and possibly even triple, what we've accomplished so far. We're just getting warmed up."
Where Charley Is Today: A Certification Program With a Growing Reach and a Virtual Version on the Way
Oak Cliff Pilates Academy runs its five-week intensive Mat and Reformer Pilates instructor certification three times a year in Dallas. Students go through a single unified track with a digital course suite on Kajabi that accompanies the live program and remains accessible after completion. Charley and Cory teach every cohort together, bringing both contemporary and classical Pilates perspectives to each group.
A fully virtual evergreen version is in development and expected on Kajabi in early 2027. The additional development time will allow the team to further refine the educational experience before bringing it to a broader audience. The team is also exploring a condensed, multi-day version of the program that can travel to studios and cities throughout the country.
Alongside Oak Cliff Pilates Academy, Charley plans to develop his own educational brand over the next four to six months, with interests that extend beyond Pilates into entrepreneurship, education, mentorship, and helping people transform their expertise into meaningful businesses and educational products.
"Several years ago, I realized that, at my core, I'm a teacher and mentor," he says. "I'm at my best when I get to share what I know, help people grow, and watch them become more capable and confident because of it. Whether I'm teaching clients, mentoring instructors, or building educational programs, I'm fueled by the occasions when I'm connecting with others and serving their growth in some way."

What This Means for You
Charley did not start with an audience. He started with a problem he understood from the inside, a co-creator who brought decades of classical training, and a program built specifically to close the gap the industry had left open.
The $100,000 in under a year did not come from a large following or a polished launch. It came from a clear market problem, a specific and credible solution, and the discipline to keep improving the product with every cohort that came through.
"AI was an incredible resource while we were building the program. It accelerated research, organization, and content development in ways that simply weren't possible a few years ago. At the same time, it became even more important that we emphasize the human experience of teaching, which AI can't deliver. Great instructors build trust, rapport, confidence, and genuine relationships with their clients. That's why people come back. That living, breathing, in-the-moment human connection is irreplaceable."
That principle applies far beyond Pilates. The knowledge that comes from years of doing something, watching others do it, and understanding the difference between technical competence and the human quality that makes a great teacher, that is the thing no platform and no algorithm produces. It has to come from someone who has lived it.
That credibility has a source. Charley built his career. Cory built hers. Together they built the program.
Not a curriculum. A standard.
